About Wayne Rooney

Wayne Mark Rooney (born 24 October 1985) is an English former professional footballer and manager. A forward, he is regarded as one of England’s leading players of his generation. Rooney is Manchester United’s all-time leading goalscorer, with 253 goals, and scored 53 goals in 120 appearances for England.

Club career

Rooney began his professional career at Everton, making his senior debut in 2002. At 16, he announced himself with a long-range goal against Arsenal that ended the London club’s 30-match unbeaten league run.

He joined Manchester United in 2004 and spent 13 seasons at Old Trafford. Rooney scored 253 goals for the club, won five Premier League titles and lifted the Champions League in 2008. His other honours with United included the FA Cup, three League Cups, the Europa League and the FIFA Club World Cup.

After returning to Everton in 2017, Rooney moved to Major League Soccer side D.C. United in 2018. He joined Derby County in 2020 as a player-coach and retired from playing in January 2021, when he became the club’s manager.

International career

Rooney made his England debut in 2003, aged 17. He represented his country at three World Cups and three European Championships, scoring 53 goals in 120 appearances. He was England captain and held the men’s national-team goalscoring record until it was surpassed by Harry Kane.

Playing style and legacy

Rooney was known for his strength, work rate, technical ability and versatility. He played as a striker, second striker and attacking midfielder, and was also used in wide positions. In the Premier League, he scored 208 goals and recorded 103 assists.
