Where is Alejandro Garnacho now?

As of 13 October 2026, Alejandro Garnacho is an Aston Villa player on loan from Chelsea. The move is for the 2026/27 season and includes a conditional obligation to become permanent if agreed criteria are met. He is 22, with a Puskás-winning goal, an FA Cup final and more than a hundred Premier League appearances behind him. His story is still being written; “fall” makes it sound finished when it is not.

The sharper question is how a winger who became famous for spectacular moments can make those moments part of a dependable senior game. That question followed him from Manchester United to Chelsea and now to Villa.

A youth reputation with evidence behind it

Garnacho joined Manchester United from Atlético Madrid as a teenager in 2020. The first major public proof of his promise came in the 2022 FA Youth Cup final. He scored twice as United beat Nottingham Forest 3–1 at Old Trafford, in front of more than 60,000 people. It was a remarkable night, but it was also a genuine achievement in a competitive final, not just a viral clip.

His senior breakthrough followed quickly. In November 2022, the 18-year-old came off the bench at Fulham and scored a stoppage-time winner from a pass by a teammate. A year later, he adjusted to a cross at Everton and launched himself into the overhead kick that became the defining image of his early career.

The goal won the 2024 FIFA Puskás Award. Garnacho later told FIFA he had practised the technique in training. That is a useful detail: the finish was audacious, but the movement was not entirely improvised. There was work behind the moment.

From Goodison Park to an FA Cup final

The overhead kick was extraordinary. The 2024 FA Cup final gave his rise another kind of substance. Manchester United beat Manchester City 2–1 at Wembley, with Garnacho opening the scoring after a defensive mix-up. He and Kobbie Mainoo became the first pair of teenagers to score in an FA Cup final.

The opening goal rewarded his alertness and willingness to chase a loose ball. In the move for the second, he passed rather than forcing the finish himself. Those actions offered a broader picture than the one-goal highlight: he could attack space, react quickly and help a team move the ball forward.

Still, a handful of defining actions cannot settle the question of what a young attacker will become. A winger has to make useful choices through ordinary phases too: when to dribble, when to release the ball, how to help the team without possession and how to stay influential when the match is not opening up.

When selection became part of the story

In December 2024, Ruben Amorim left Garnacho and Marcus Rashford out of the Manchester derby squad. Amorim said neither was injured and described it as a selection decision informed by training, match performances and engagement with teammates. That explanation tells us what the manager said; it does not establish rumours about private conduct.

The team’s structure and Garnacho’s role were also changing. A player used to receiving wide and driving at a full-back may need different habits in a system that asks attackers to combine in tighter spaces or take on more defensive work. That is a tactical adjustment, not proof that he could not adapt.

The tension became public after the 2025 Europa League final. United lost to Tottenham, and Garnacho questioned being given only a short appearance after playing earlier rounds. His frustration was plain. So was the consequence: the disagreement widened into a debate about his place at the club and the manager’s authority. Neither his disappointment nor Amorim’s decision, on its own, tells the whole story.

A year later, Garnacho reflected on his exit in an interview with Sky Sports. He said he had struggled with being on the bench, believed at 20 that he needed to play every match, and could have handled parts of the final months differently. It is a more useful account than trying to diagnose his character from celebrations or social media.

Chelsea offered a fresh start and a new measure

Chelsea signed Garnacho in August 2025 after his United career ended. The club’s announcement noted that he had already made 93 Premier League appearances and scored 16 league goals. He arrived with senior experience, not simply the label of a prospect.

In 2025/26, Chelsea recorded 43 appearances, eight goals and four assists for him across all competitions. The club’s profile lists 24 Premier League appearances. Those totals use different scopes: together they show a season with contributions, while leaving a fair question about how consistently he could affect league matches.

Chelsea’s official profile confirms the Villa loan for 2026/27, with the conditional permanent-transfer clause. A second move in two seasons is a change of direction, but it is not a verdict on his career. It gives him another club, another role to learn and another chance to show what lasts beyond the highlights.

What the next chapter at Aston Villa can show

Garnacho has already scored for Villa, finding the net in a 3–1 October friendly win over Sevilla. Alysson supplied the low cross. A pre-season goal is a small piece of evidence, not proof of a revival, but it shows the kind of simple, valuable action that can matter over a season: arriving in the box and finishing a teammate’s delivery.

The next steps are easier to judge than the question of whether he will score another spectacular goal. Can he settle into a role? Can he make sound decisions across a full match, contribute when he is not scoring and respond to selection without letting frustration dominate the story? Those are measures of development, not claims about what Villa’s staff have told him.

Garnacho’s rise was never imaginary. He delivered in a Youth Cup final, scored one of the Premier League’s most memorable goals and helped Manchester United win the FA Cup. The difficult part came in turning that ability into a reliable place across changing managers, systems and expectations.

At 22, he has time and a substantial body of senior football ahead of him. The overhead kick will always be the image that made him unforgettable. The quieter work at Aston Villa will tell us much more about the player he becomes.
